Tennis Australia have recognised the Gosford Tennis Centre as a Top 6 National Regional Tennis Centre and as such are working with the local Gosford Tennis Centre committee in planning for a total upgrade of existing facilities. This will allow the local area to host future WTA, AMT, National and State events creating jobs, increased tourism dollars, and bringing world standard facilities to the Central Coast.
Draft Master Plans have been drawn up for both the Lower Complex and Higher Complex (click on each link to view) with plans to convert up to 16 courts into ITF standard hard courts and up to 8 club size synthetic club grass courts, all with improved lighting and professional on court facilities. In addition to improving tennis court facilities, there are provisions for improved member facilities including new change rooms, eating and car parking area’s, and a gym.
As we finalise the plan, the committee’s biggest challenge is to determine which courts will be hard or synthetic grass. Given that courts 1- 4 cannot be extended to ITF standards, these courts are expected to be converted to synthetic grass, whilst courts 5 – 7 would revert back to ITF standard hard courts, leaving the higher complex with up to 5 ITF standard courts. Debate continues as to whether we convert courts 10 & 11 to hard court given they are already ITF standard size, or whether we need to resurface with synthetic grass.
The overall cost to upgrade the 23 court facility is in excess of $8M which would be funded via a mix of $ for $ funding generated by the operating income of the centre, government grants, and Tennis Australia rebates. No spending decisions have been made as yet as we still await the outcome of an extension of the centres lease with Gosford City Council. More on this will issue in coming months, and if you want further details or information please contact rob@gdta.com.au or tony@gdta.com.au.
